Spotlight On: New Moon

Wilmington, Delaware

John KurtzJohn Kurtz, designer and owner of New Moon, is a renowned rug historian. Over the years, through his PBS television series, John has introduced millions of viewers to the world of Oriental rugs. A trained artist, John sketches and paints each rug before it is hand woven in Nepal from the most spectacular materials in the world, such as hand-spun, 100 percent Tibetan wool and luxurious Chinese silk. As a founding member of GoodWeave®, New Moon is helping to abolish illegal child labor in the carpet industry, while ensuring its rugs are beautiful inside and out.

New Moon is a relatively small, family-owned company dedicated to the highest standards of design and workmanship. Owners of New Moon carpets can take pride in knowing that the company is committed to maintaining these standards, both for their carpets and the well-being of their weavers.

Every New Moon rug is a signed original―a personal guarantee of quality and authenticity from a trustworthy name. Every rug is also a work of art created by skilled craftspeople that reflects the rich and time-honored art of rug weaving. It is hand knotted with Tibetan wool that is hand-spun and dyed in small batches to achieve the highly desired "abrash" effect, a subtle variation in hue that enhances the richness of the color and makes the designs come alive. The traditional wool-gathering, hand-dyeing and hand-knotting techniques produce slight variations in dimension, abrash and color matching that are highly valued in a hand-crafted product that is truly unique.
