Spotlight On: The Moorland Rug Company

Brian Sales, founder of The Moorland Rug Company, has spent a working life-time immersed in the world of rugs and carpets. Following a successful design career working for some of the world’s leading manufacturers and having co-partnered one of the few independent carpet design studios in the UK, he has a keen eye for originality and a passion for detail, which are reflected in his GoodWeave certified rugs. Sales runs the company with his wife Judith.

The Moorland Rug Company was established in 2006 and is based in County Durham, surrounded by the North Pennines – a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the North of England. The rugged landscape and the glory of nature provide inspiration for Brian’s rug designs. His hallmark is achieving a flow and movement to each rug, which originates from his meticulous application to detail. "It is a painstaking process as each tuft and knot must be carefully placed in relation to its neighbor to achieve the desired effect. It is absorbing work and I tend to be at my most creative late at night, when there are no distractions".

A collaboration with The Royal Horticultural Society, organizers of the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show and owners of an amazing archive of botanical prints, has culminated in the introduction of an exclusive collection of rugs: The RHS Lindley Collection. Each rug is a bespoke hand knotted work of art all made in Jaipur, India.

Brian concludes: "I am lucky to work with some of the most skilled weavers in the world. I could not countenance that any of our rugs were made at the expense of children, which is why we have aligned The Moorland Rug Company with GoodWeave. I believe artistry and such principles go hand in hand."
