Designers Name Sustainability as Top Factor in Rug Sourcing

As the competition for design clients heats up, interior designers are using sustainability as a selling point in their businesses, to include sourcing GoodWeave certified rugs, according to GoodWeave’s survey of 53 members of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID). As one ASID member told GoodWeave, “Keep up the good work educating the public. It is only through this awareness that people can make more informed choices.”

Designers found GoodWeave’s Rug Sourcebook as a valuable resource, with 57 percent of designers surveyed using this as a sourcing tool. Designers reported that they used it “to advise clients in rug purchasing,” search for GoodWeave licensed rug makers, and to find other certified rugs in their area. Overall, it was viewed as “a great reference and education tool.” Nearly 60 percent of respondents prefer the Sourcebook in an online rather than print format and 65 percent responded that a digital “book” would be more useful rather than a DVD, microsite or smartphone application.

Not surprisingly, survey participants said price was their primary consideration when recommending a carpet to a client. Yet material and sustainability were the second and third considerations, ranked higher than brand name, construction or other factors. One designer said that GoodWeave’s mission made certified rugs “very desirable” to their clientele and another recommended us “as the pioneers in the area rug industry” when speaking with clients.

Through the survey, GoodWeave discovered how designers have adapted their business approach to changes in the marketplace and emerging client needs. The two most common responses were embracing online marketing and using sustainability as a quality selling point. As one designer said, “We have always embraced green design principles. This continues to be our guide to meeting client needs, which seems to want to more and more support fair trade and be socially responsible. We've positioned ourselves as the go-to expert on green design and it is paying off, even during this economic downturn.  We're truly grateful.”
